Find the Right Foundation Shade

Applying an undetectable base is the first step in achieving a gorgeous face. Here’s help for picking your perfect hue.

If you’re shopping at a department store...

Swipe three possible matches on your lower cheek or jawline (the shade should closely match your neck as well as your face). Take a mirror and head toward a window or go outside so you can see the hues in natural light. The one that fades into your skin without much blending is the winner, says celebrity makeup artist Carol Shaw, creator of LORAC Cosmetics.

If you’re shopping at the drugstore...
The trick is to first determine if you are pale, medium, or dark. Once you know your skin tone, use the bottle shade name as a guideline. Pale skin tends to have some redness, so it’s best to stay away from pink-toned foundation shades. Look for a hue labeled beige or buff to neutralize ruddiness. Girls in the middle of the skin-tone spectrum have light beige, olive, or tan complexions with warm undertones. Asian skin also falls into this category since it has a lot of yellow in it. Stick with shades labeled warm, medium, or golden. Dark skin can range from as light as café au lait to as deep as ebony. To prevent a grayish cast, go for colors like tan, sable, or chestnut. Also, African-American women often have oily skin, which can cause their base to oxidize and appear darker when it mixes with oil, so try a foundation that is slightly lighter than your complexion.

Weekday A.M.: Pretty and Polished

Smooth skin.
When you wake up, your skin is in its most dewy state, so you don’t need to cover it up much, says NYC dermatologist Francesca Fusco. Just apply a thin veil of a sheer foundation. Then dab a creamy concealer over blemishes and under-eye circles.

Rosy cheeks.
Because your circulation is slower in the morning, your cheeks will look kind of pale, says Dr. Fusco. Amp up your flush factor with cream blush, then swirl on a powder bronzer for a subtle boost.

Silky skin. By night your skin is dehydrated, says Dr. Fusco. Reach for a moisturizing foundation to look fresh. Then hide blemishes with concealer and dust shiny spots with a light layer of powder.

Gleaming cheeks. Ever notice how your face seems to get ruddy as the day goes on? Stress and caffeine intake can create extra redness by causing blood vessels to swell and expand under the skin, says Dr. Fusco. So don’t pile on more blush — just brighten your existing shade with a sweep of gold shimmer powder.

Getting hot locks can be a catch-22: You assault your mane with blow-dryers, brushes, and styling tools to make it look great. But over time, all that primping can leave hair dull and brittle. What’s a girl to do? Follow this advice from our book, Cosmo’s Sexiest Beauty Secrets, for preventing tress distress.

Suds up less often. Wash your mane every two days with a gentle shampoo to avoid stripping it of its natural oils.

Condition with care. Daily wear and tear saps hair of moisture. In addition to using a regular conditioner, treat your locks (especially your ends, which are driest) to a weekly intensive mask.

Keep tools in top shape. Old, worn bristles on your brush can rough up your hair’s cuticle. When shopping for a new one, run it down your arm. If the bristles feel abrasive, skip it. And while you already know that it’s best to detangle wet strands with a wide-tooth comb, African-American babes should do it in the shower, right after applying conditioner, to protect your fragile tresses.

Blow-dry, don’t blowtorch, your hair. Before you even as much as look at your blow-dryer, apply a thermal protective styling product (pick one that calls this out on the bottle). Dry your locks at least 50 percent with your dryer on the low-heat setting. Then you can crank up the heat and wield a brush. Once you get going, hold the dryer 3 inches away from your hair, point it downward, and keep it in constant motion to prevent fried sections.

Just because you don’t have tons of primping time doesn’t mean you can’t look hot.

Whip Up a Posh Ponytail
What upgrades your usual fallback style from simple to sexy? Location, location, location. Perch it at the crown of your head, and it won’t channel a cheerleader. To do it, flip your head upside down to position the pony as high as possible, and secure it with a chic elastic for extra polish. Back-comb the top inch of the tail to add some oomph at the roots.

Flip Your Part
One of the fastest styles you can create without a pair of scissors? A low side part. It’s so dramatic and instantly chic, plus, it’s great for all hair types and textures. All you have to do is part hair about 4 to 6 inches above the ear then sweep strands back with one of the teeth on your comb. Smooth any flyaways with a drop of shine serum.

Don Something Dazzling

If you’re running crazy late for a party and your hair is only semi-done, slip on a flashy headband or a silk scarf. It makes such a glamorous statement, without any hassle. For maximum effect, pick something that has a colorful, eye-catching print.
